3 Tips to Avoid Roommate Confrontation

Whether you are planning to room with a friend in college or someone completely random, your cohabitating skills are going to be pushed to the test at some point. Sort of similar to the feeling you get when you spend too much time with your family or friends on vacation. Here are a couple tips that will hopefully mitigate any college roommate arguments down the road or prevent them all together.

  • Please and Thank You

Yes, you’ve been living together for a couple months now. Yes, he/she is now one of your good friends. Yes, you don’t care if he/she uses or borrows any of your belongings. However, it doesn’t mean you don’t have to ask before you do. It’s not that your roommate is going to get mad if you take their headphones for a class period. It’s just the sort of annoyance that when it reoccurs again and again, it may stoke the flames or eventually tip the glass.

  • “A Clean Home is a Happy Home”

When your entire living space is about as big as a typical bedroom or single hotel room, garbage, clothes, dishes, books, and anything else you leave out starts to accumulate at an alarming rate. The easiest way to make sure your hygiene habits don’t get in the way or start to interrupt you and your roommate’s friendship is to clean up after yourself. A bad day can easily become a terrible day when you get home from class just to look at the junkyard that is your dorm room and your roommate’s dirty clothes are on your bed.

  • Boundaries

You’re both adults and should understand the importance of personal space. If your roomie is on the phone with his or her parents, give them the opportunity to be alone for a bit and take a walk. If they are staying in and studying for their exam, now may not be the best time to blast music from your laptop. If they can’t get out of bed because they’re sick, it probably isn’t the best time to hassle them about the 5 dollars they owe you. If you guys set up rules and boundaries from the beginning, you should be able to avoid a lot of grievances and a lot of what would have been wasted time arguing.
