5 Fun Ways to Stay Healthy and Fit in College

Freshmen have a lot of fears and anxieties about their first year of college and a major one is their fear of gaining the dreaded Freshman 15. The Freshman 15 is very real, but it doesn’t have to be for everyone. Going to the gym everyday may work in the beginning, but it may start to lose its appeal and become a boring routine. There’s also the issue of eating healthy in an environment where junk food is so accessible and often the more convenient choice. Here are 5 ways to make staying healthy and fit in college fun.

1)Work out with a group. Working out with a group of friends is a simple and effective way to make exercising more fun. You can choose to sign up for an exercise class together, or simply hit up the gym as a collective. It’s great because you have each other for motivation and laughs while you’re working out. When you incorporate friendship into fitness, it doesn’t seem like as much of a burden, but rather another opportunity to spend quality time with people you like and make memories.

2) Have cooking parties with your friends. If you’re having trouble finding the time, energy, or know-how to cook healthy meals for yourself, a great way to turn things around is to make it into an event for you and your friends. You can either have your friends over and cook healthy recipes together, or have everyone prepare a healthy dish on their own to contribute to the meal. This is a great way to learn about new, delicious, and nutritious recipe ideas that you can use anytime.

3) Try an unusual sport or activity. If you’re tired of the same elliptical machines and treadmills, a fun alternative is to try something that you’ve never done before or something unusual. From extreme sports to different types of yoga to speed skating or snorkeling, there are so many cool activities that will challenge you physically and stimulate you mentally. The only downside is that the proper facilities may not be close to home for the mere fact that these activities are more rarely practiced, but if you’re lucky enough to go to college near a motocross track or by the ocean, or anywhere else that allows, go for it!

4) Change up your exercise location. Another way to make fitness fun is to keep your exercise locations diverse. There’s nothing more discouraging than monotony in you exercising routine. If you’re at the same gym every day, staring at the same walls and mirrors and machines and people, you may want to go to the park every once in a while, or take a hike in the mountains, or simply go to a different fitness center. A change of scenery can work wonders for your motivation and energy level.

5) Get some cool exercising gear. It sounds silly but having a nice outfit and some cool gear can actually make exercising more fun. It’s all about putting yourself in the right mindset. When you look good, strong, and put together in your work out attire, you’ll feel more motivated to exercise. Also if you’re using jazzy equipments like exercising balls or hula hoops or Perfect Pushups, you can have a good time while you work out.
