About Lauren

lauren tch photoHi! My name is Lauren Anderson. I’m the Chief Operating Officer at TheCollegeHelper.com, a certified School Counselor in the state of Illinois, and a former accountant.

I graduated from DePaul University back in 2006 with a bachelor’s of science degree in Accountancy and started my career at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in the Forensic Services Group.

After about three years, I transitioned from a public to corporate accounting role at NAVTEQ, where I traveled all over the world performing royalty audits. During this time, I also became a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).

From there, I took an internal audit management position at a privately-owned industrial supply company, while going to graduate school at Lewis University to obtain my master’s degree in School Counseling.

In mid-2009, I ran into an old high school friend of mine, Aaron. I told him about my desire to help high school students and he convinced me to start a college admissions assistance website. Soon after, we launched TheCollegeHelper.com!

In 2012, I completed my master’s degree and passed the Type 73 examination to become a certified school counselor in the State of Illinois.

Currently, I specialize in college and career consulting and manage the day to day operation of TheCollegeHelper.com.

Why School Counseling?

Education has always been a huge part of my life; both of my parents were teachers. In fact, two of the most important lessons I learned came from an 8th grade social studies teacher, also known as my mother:

  1. Education is the key to success; and
  2. Anything is possible with dedication and hard work.

As a young and impressionable child, my mother’s enthusiasm and commitment to education was contagious.

“We do homework first and watch television later,” she would always declare.

Although not apparent at the time, she was equipping me with “tools” and good habits that would later prove to be helpful. This same discipline and drive to succeed is something that has stuck with me throughout my academic and professional career.

What if every student had someone to provide him or her with this same type of support and guidance? Would their opportunities to succeed be limitless? Yes, I think so!

I’m passionate about providing college admissions assistance to students and helping them reach their highest level of potential, academically and personally.

Accountant to School Counselor: Am I truly qualified?

As part of my master’s program, I spent over a year volunteering at St. Joseph High School, under the leadership of Diane Palumbo, Director of School Guidance.

Below is what Ms. Palumbo had to say about TheCollegeHelper.com:

This year, as we gear up for college planning on campus, Ms. Anderson’s website and guide will be an integral component of the process.

It has been a treat to provide Ms. Anderson with the “lab” experience to explore and fine-tune her website. It has been even more gratifying to witness her talents and career exploration unfold into a meaningful and needed vocation.
