College Safety Rankings

When deciding on which colleges to apply to or which school you ultimately want to attend, campus safety and crime rates might be a factor you want to regard highly.

These days, there seems to be an ever-present mention of some new college shooting or murder in the media. College students already carry the burden of their studies along with side jobs and internships, and should not have to deal with the extra pressure of being extremely cautious and weary of their campus environment.

The most current extensive and reliable lists of both the safest and most dangerous college campuses in America were compiled by the Daily Beast in 2010. The Daily Beast gathered data from the U.S. Department of Education as well as the FBI and the Secret Service regarding campus security and crime data from 458 universities across the country.

The lists are based off of the most recently available information from police reports regarding the calendar years prior to 2010, so they may be slightly outdated.

These lists are based off of the following nine categories of crime:

  • Murder
  • Negligent Homicide
  • Forcible Rapes
  • Non-forcible Rapes
  • Robberies
  • Aggregated Assaults
  • Burglaries
  • Car Thefts
  • Arsons

Keep in mind that not all crime is of equal stamina, yet these lists merely account for the sheer number of total crime. Murder is much more serious than burglaries or robberies, but the Daily Beast lists regard them all as the same under the broad category of crime.

Also take note that these crimes only take place on the college campus itself, neglecting the crime rate in the surrounding city the school is located in. These lists are also based off of only what was reported to the authorities.

When it comes to choosing schools, it is important to remember that larger universities are bound to have higher crime rates simply because of the larger number of students on campus. Most of the safest schools are smaller in both size and student population, while you will find quite a few Ivy League schools present on the “Most Dangerous” list. The Daily Beast lists do seem to take into account the crime to total student enrollment ratio for ranking order.
