Florida Bright Futures Scholarship

The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program is a merit based scholarship offered to students in Florida who plan to attend a state school.

Although the program has undergone countless changes and reductions since it was started in 1997, it remains one of the most popular scholarships in the state.

I always assumed Florida Bright Futures Scholarship was known all over the state of Florida and that everyone knew about the bright futures requirements, but after I started college I realized this wasn’t so.

I’ve met many people who didn’t even know the scholarship existed to begin with, and countless others who knew about it but didn’t know how to apply.

So, as a service to my fellow Floridians, here’s the scoop on the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship:

  • WHAT is it

Bright Futures is a scholarship awarded to Florida residents who are planning to attend an in state college, university or vocational school.

The scholarship pays a certain amount of the student’s tuition depending on the school they attend and the award level they qualify for.

This chart on The Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) website breaks down the amounts.

  • WHO can apply

Any high school senior can apply for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. However, there are certain GPA and test score requirements as well as community service hour amounts that must be met in order to qualify for the scholarship.

  • WHEN can I apply

You can only apply during your senior year of high school. This is the most important fact to remember because as soon as you graduate, you’re ineligible so, do not procrastinate.

  • WHY should I apply

The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship is amazing because it doesn’t take into account your financial situation. Many students are constantly turned away from financial aid because their parents make “too much money,” but the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship qualifications are solely based on your academic achievements.

Although the award amounts are decreasing every year due to the economy, it still pays for a significant amount of tuition and in my experience, it awards more money than most other scholarships.

  • HOW can I apply

To apply, simply go to the OSFA website, click the “Apply Here” tab and follow the directions on the Initial State Student Application link. It’s seriously as simple as that.

The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship was a life saver for me in college, and I think everyone should apply even if they don’t think they’ll qualify.

It doesn’t cost anything and it can end up saving you thousands of dollars a year!
