Free College Activities To Do On And Off Campus

Unfortunately there is a reality to the stereotypical “broke” college kid.

College is expensive, mom and dad aren’t there to slip a twenty in your pocket, and with the demands of academics it’s hard to hold down a great paying job.

However, just because you’re, “broke” doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. There are many fun activities that you can safely do on and off campus that won’t break the bank. Here are a few:

  • Volunteer

Volunteering should not hold the negative connotation of just working for free. Volunteering is a great way to touch the lives of others who may advertently touch yours. Many colleges have volunteering clubs already on campus that could help with some volunteering ventures. If not, on your own, call animal shelters, boys and girls clubs, hospitals, or schools, and find a volunteer opportunity that meets your personal passion.

  • Scavenger hunt

Get together two carloads of friends, put together some undercover costumes, and make a list of silly things to find and do safely around town or on campus. To make things a little more interesting, make a friendly non-financial wager. Something like the loosing team does the winning team’s laundry for a week. If anything, the photo album you can make from the night’s pictures will be well worth it.

  • Take time for yourself

You may find that the best thing for you to do during your down time is actually nothing at all. Read a book or magazine, do a crossword puzzle, lie on your bed and listen to music, paint, draw, or redecorate your room.

  • Take Advantage of Student Events

The student events counsel on campus is a great thing to utilize for tons of free entertainment. Check your email or school website for free movie screenings, special performances, gaming competitions, and arts and crafts.

  • Organized recreation

Going to the gym, for a run, or a bike ride alone is a great way to stay fit and clear your head, but organized recreation is a great way to meet new friends too. Get together a group of people for weekly basketball games in the gym, organize a kickball tournament, go for group hikes, or take on a friendly tennis match.
