How To Get Into College

Getting into college isn’t as hard as you may think.  It just requires organization, dedication, and effort.  Do you want to know how to get into college?  Keep reading to find out…

Step 1 – Brainstorm about what career/major might be of interest to you.  Examine your strengths and weaknesses.  Determine what you’re passionate about.  Even though this might change over time, you should use this as a starting point.

Maybe you’re a rock star artist and you want to become a painter or maybe you love math and are considering becoming an accountant.  Whatever the case may be, this will help you to start thinking about what type of college might fit you.

Step 2 – Figure out what type of college you might want to go to (i.e. Big, Small, Far Away, Close to Home, etc.).  Discuss your options with your counselors, parents, teachers, and friends.

Also, you can visit  Petersons’ is a comprehensive search website designed to help students select colleges based upon their preferences.

Step 3 – Research the school’s admissions requirements (i.e. GPA, standardized test scores, essays, letters of recommendation application fees, etc.).

Select schools that fit your current situation…is it affordable and how likely is it that you will be accepted?  This will allow you to be prepared when it comes time to submit your application.

Step 4 – Pay attention to deadlines!  Senior year will be hectic…you will have to manage the college application process in addition to all of your normal responsibilities (i.e. homework, part-time jobs, extracurricular activities, etc.)

If you don’t pay close attention to application deadlines, financial aid deadlines, housing deadlines (if you plan to live on campus), and scholarship deadlines, they can quickly pass you by without you realizing it.

Step 5 – Apply to at least 3-5 schools.  Make sure that all of the schools that you apply to are schools that you wouldn’t mind attending if you get accepted.

This will give you some options, in case you don’t get accepted into all of them.  It’s important that you play it safe here and give yourself the best shot at getting into college.

Step 6 – Figure out how much it’s going to cost you and how you’re going to pay for it.  In the college world, this is known as COA or Cost of Attendance.

The COA includes the following 4 elements: Tuition & Fees; Room & Board; Miscellaneous/Personal Expenses (i.e. laundry, cell phone bills, etc.); and Travel (i.e. cost related to traveling back and forth from school and home).

To determine how much college is going to cost you, you will need to calculate the items described above and deduct them from the financial aid you’ve received from Federal Student Aid and other private scholarships or institutional grant programs (if applicable).

If you follow these 6 steps on how to get into college, you’ll be a freshman on campus in no time!
