Shooing Dorm Room Fruit Flies Away is Easier Than You Think

Shoo fly, don’t bother me! Oh, and don’t bother my roommate, or my dorm room, or my food. It’s just obnoxious. Pesky fruit flies are inevitable when food is in your living space, whether it’s a dorm room or an apartment. Luckily, there are ways to be rid of fruit flies. That’s a worry off your plate.

Sweep away your troubles

Sitting at your desk, browsing on your computer, and studying day after day becomes tiring. With boxes of cereal, snacks, and fruits on the shelf above your desk, food is tempting. Not to mention that food is essential to live. However, crumbs fall as you munch away on treats while watching Netflix during study breaks. Those crumbs fall to the ground or around your desk. Swiffer, sweep, or vacuum away your crumbs. It’s one less temptation for the fruit flies to stick around.

Close, zip, and store

Remember those food items mentioned earlier? Those need tending too. Sealing your food keeps the food fresh and the fruit flies out. You don’t have to go spend money on bag clips. Using old hair clips or paperclips will do. Clip bags closed so that Cinnamon Toast Crunch stays fresh for tomorrow morning. However, the fruit is the pressing matter. Keep fruits in brown bags or Ziploc baggies. This keeps the scent away from the fruit flies who are anxious to get to your food. Don’t feel too bad about depriving fruit flies of a food source. If there’s anything A Bug’s Life taught viewers, it’s that bugs are pretty inventive in finding new food sources.

Soap and suds

Let’s face it. Leaving dirty dishes sitting out is gross. Not only that, it’s more difficult to clean them later. There’s no Mrs. Doubtfire to clean up after you. Those dirty dishes from morning cereal or late night pizza orders are targets for fruit flies. Take those dishes to the bathroom sink and wash them. Not only will the fruit flies fly away, but your room will smell cleaner. Febreeze will have to do less work in keeping your room smelling fresh.

When in doubt, toss it out

Just not in your wastebasket. Throwing away scraps of food, especially fruit, is a major temptation for fruit flies. You can wrap the discarded food in baggies before disposing of it, but that is very wasteful. Instead, throw away your food somewhere else. Take your food to the garbage disposal or chute on your floor. Or you can throw it away in the bathroom wastebaskets. With those bathrooms being cleaned every day, the food will be taken away quickly.

Drastic measures

Preventive measures don’t always keep the fruit flies away. Somehow, they always find a way in. In drastic times, you have to set out bait to catch the fruit flies. A common trick is using apple cider vinegar. Simply leave the liquid out, covered with a small opening. If you heat the apple cider vinegar before putting it out, the smell will be stronger, therefore attracting fruit flies faster. Or you can simply leave an old piece of fruit out to attract the fruit flies. No matter how you decide to be rid of the pests, do it in a humane way.

Fruit flies may not seem like the worst of your troubles at college, but they’re still annoying. With these simple tips, those fruit flies will be gone in no time.
