Should Students Learn Multitasking or Single Tasking?

Nowadays, one of the most talked about and discussed notions in offices is whether to engage employees in multitasking or not. This also applies to students in colleges and universities as they also go through similar activities and experiences.
Let us talk about whether multitasking is important for students or should the focus be on single tasking.

The definition of multitasking:

First of all, all that is important is to know what exactly is multitasking. The exact definition of multitasking is performing multiple tasks at the time involving multiple senses. For example, as a student, when you are trying to message a friend, use Facebook and write an assignment, you are basically using multiple senses to complete multiple tasks at the same time, so you are multitasking.
Even after the definition is clear, many cannot decide on whether it is a trait that should be boasted about on a resume or it is something that harms productivity. Do students who multitask learn more than those who do not? Are such students able to achieve more in life and get better grades than those who do not?

The definition of single tasking:

Single tasking is basically when you keep your focus on a single task before moving on to the second one. For example, when you finish your English literature assignment first, then move on to the Mathematics assignment and then plan your free time for socialization.
It is argued that single tasking is time consuming as students who have a lot of tasks to accomplish in a small amount of time, cannot complete those tasks if they start to single task. It seems that single tasking is inefficient and not feasible for those who have to perform complex multiple tasks daily.

To multitask or not?

Most of the students find themselves occupied with multiple tasks at a time, so they get confused which one to complete first and which one to put on hold. This is basically the question that haunts professionals too.
While it is easier to complete tasks on time when you engage in multitasking, there is no guarantee that the work completed will be of high quality and accurate as your mind will be engaged in different tasks so your concentration will be divided, which can result in errors. So, when you multitask, there is an increased probability that you will make errors.

Most researches indicate that multitasking can lead to health problems, increased stress in students, decreased productivity as well as creativity. This is because when you take on multiple tasks, you cannot provide undivided attention to one task, which raises the chances of you making blunders and mistakes, you will have to revise the task again. So, you will be wasting time and resources to revise a task which could have been performed right the first time if you had given it your full attention.

Conclusion:

Basically, it all comes down to your priorities: as a student, you have to figure out which is more important and which one is critical. If you figure out how to set your priorities and how to differentiate between important and urgent tasks, you will be a successful professional.
If you want to reduce the risk of making errors, make a to-do list as well as a not to-do list. This will help you to prioritize tasks which will assist you to focus on single tasks.

There will be situations where you will be required to multitask, however, multitasking should be avoided as it will lead you to lose focus which can lead you to making irreversible blunders. So, multitasking should be avoided when possible to reduce redundancies and mistakes.
