Staying Healthy In The Dorms

It’s inevitable; you’re going to get a nasty cold while living in the dorms. Illnesses spread like wildfire in dorms and there is no way to fully avoid the inevitable.

But there are ways to avoid frequent bouts of sickness.

Living in cramped quarters leads to quick spread of germs and bacteria that can infect everyone. Especially sharing a communal bathroom.

There’s the obvious tips to avoid getting sick like washing your hands, not sharing drinks, and keeping hand sanitizer around. But there are also some less obvious tips and tricks for both prevention and after you’ve already caught a bug.

Prevention

  • Vitamin C

This one works as both prevention and after you’ve fallen victim care.  Vitamin C helps to boost your immune system, your body’s natural defense system.

You may be surprised to learn that oranges aren’t the only source of Vitamin C. The top 10 sources of Vitamin C in food are as follows;

  • Guava
  • Red Pepper
  • Kiwi
  • Green Pepper
  • Grapefruit
  • Veggie Juice
  • Strawberries
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Cantaloupe
  • Oranges (of course)
  • Clean Eating

Avoiding high processed foods and foods high in sugar in your regular diet will help to ward off illnesses. These unhealthy foods hurt your immune system and overall health making you more susceptible to the dorm room cold.

  • Vitamin D

Vitamins really are the best things you can feed your body when trying to fight off illness. Vitamin D is especially important if you live in an area that doesn’t see too much sunlight in the colder months.

Treatment

Well it happened. You caught a cold and now you want to fight it off as quickly as possible. Without mom’s homemade soup this may sound impossible, but I promise that you can make it through!

  • Garlic

Believe it or not, but garlic does wonders for fighting a cold. It holds anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties to fight off whatever ails you.

Raw garlic is where it’s at. That might sound a little intense to you, but I promise it’s easy to get the wonderful properties of garlic without overpowering your taste buds.

I like to chop my garlic up, or mince it, toast some bread, drizzle some oil on the toast and add as much garlic as possible. It’s garlic bread, only healthier!

If eating the direct garlic hurts your stomach too much, consider steeping it in water for 5 minutes, adding honey to taste and sipping on this. This is a great option if your throat is feeling a little scratchy.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar

Speaking of steeping things, making an Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) drink is another great way to fight a cold.

I know, again this sounds like an assault on your taste buds, but I promise you it’s not. ACV, like garlic, holds anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties to help boost your immune system and get ride of what’s keeping you down. I like to sip on just ACV and hot water, but if that’s too strong for you then add a little honey.

  • Honey

I keep talking about adding honey to other concoctions, but honey itself is a great way to combat sickness. Honey does most of it’s magic when combined with cinnamon. Creating a tonic of honey and cinnamon in water will surely cut your cold by days.

Don’t forget to stock up on the essentials too. Lots of tissues, soup and comfy clothes should always be considered on sick days.

Remember to always stay hydrated which will keep you nice and healthy. If someone you know is sick, avoid spending too much time exposed to their illness.

Living in tight spaces doesn’t have to mean chronic colds if you take the right steps to avoid being perpetually sick!
