Study Techniques For College During Finals

Finals are approaching. Are you ready?

This semester has come and gone and soon it will be time to study study study. Finals are a huge part of your grade so studying is a must.

We all know it is not fun to study but it is extremely important. These tests are standing in the way of your summer vacation but they have to be done before that time comes.

Here are some great tips to help you study:

1. Time Management:

  • Before you start studying, organize all of the classes you are taking and determine what you want to study first and when. Some classes might be harder than others so maybe it would be best to study for those classes first before your easier ones. This will help you out a lot with studying at ease and not put so much stress on yourself at once. Take one class at a time when it comes to studying for each.

2. Location

  • Location is a HUGE part when considering college study techniques. You don’t want to be somewhere where there are tons of people and noise. You want peace and quiet. Starbucks is not a good place to be. Tons of people and tons of noise! Yes it is nice to have a nice cup of coffee at your side when studying, but take it to go then go someplace quiet.
  • Your study location should be silent and distraction free with good lighting.
  • Have headphones with you whether you listen to music or not when studying. This will help from people bothering you, they will see the headphones in and you won’t be able to hear them.

3. Schedule Sleep

  • Sleep is important. Yes we know its important to get in a ton of study time during finals week but if you stay up all night you are not going to be able to focus on your test when all you want is to be in bed asleep. Try to get at least 8 hours of rest.

4. Take Breaks

  • Give yourself a break every hour or so. It helps you relax and get your mind off of school and studying. For best results take fifteen minute breaks between study sessions.

5. Ask for Help

  • Get some extra help from your professors or tutors just in case you are not sure about something that might be covered on the exam. Knowing anything about what will be covered will help when it comes to studying for that class. Professors always have office hours for students to come get help if needed or have a question.

6. Get your Heart Pumping. Exercise.

  • Getting your heart pumping and taking a break from studying will do wonders. You wouldn’t think it would, but it does. It relieves stress and you always feel great afterwards. Even if it’s just for fifteen to thirty minutes, any bit helps. Even going for a walk is exercise. It’s nice to WALK away from the books.

7. Snacks and Drinks

  • Bring a snack with you and take a snack break. If you really need that Starbucks coffee head over to the coffee shop and get your favorite drink and just take a break and relax and sip away. Having a snack and/or drink will help. Just make sure to try to eat something healthy like trail mix or a granola bar.  This will help fuel your body and brain.

These are just a few great study techniques for college to help you during finals or just overall in general studying. Just make sure to take a few breaks in between studying. If you don’t, you will overwhelm yourself and get stressed out quickly. Be sure to follow these tips and good luck on your finals!
