Summer 2013 Interns

Melissa Espana, University of Illinois

Melissa España is a junior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign pursuing a degree in Broadcast Journalism. She hopes to one day write for a Chicago newspaper and have a group of loyal readers. When she’s not pursuing her dreams of being a reporter, she can be found at the Sigma Kappa house, watching reruns of “The Big Bang Theory” or correcting someone’s grammar.

Jared Gerling, DePaul University

Jared Gerling earned his BA from Michigan State University. Jared has been writing since he was eleven when all his characters had swords and magic spells and bad attitudes. When not writing or studying, he can be found watching Spartan football and basketball games, reading, or working out. Jared currently lives in Chicago pursuing his MA in Writing in Publishing from DePaul University.

Chelsea Halstead, University of Portland

University of Portland junior, Chelsea Halstead, is a Communications and French double major. Chelsea hails from Alaska originally, but calls Portland, OR home now. When Chelsea isn’t at school or whipping up a mean latte as a Barista, she enjoys spending time outdoors and attempting to make Pinterest crafts!

Megan Heneghan, University of California Davis

Megan Heneghan is a junior at the University of California, Davis pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Communication, as well as a Spanish minor. She is originally from Orange County, where she grew up playing tennis. She is currently a member of the UC Davis Women’s Tennis Team. When she is not studying, she enjoys singing, reading, and cooking all different kinds of food. She also loves spending time with friends and family.

Jordan Johnson, North Central College

Jordan Johnson is a junior at North Central College in Naperville, IL pursuing degrees in journalism and interactive media studies. When she is not in the classroom, she balances her time playing for her school’s softball team and working at a local frozen yogurt shop. Jordan enjoys watching movies, thumb wars, and occasional trips into the windy city.

Shannon Kelly, University of Illinois

Shannon Kelly is a sophomore at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign studying journalism. She is involved with the student newspaper, new student programing, and greek life on campus. She has a passion for travel, loves animals, and is always up for an adventure. Shannon also enjoys movies, music and fashion

John Kesler, UC Davis

John Kesler is a senior studying communication at the University of California, Davis. If he is on campus, he can be found in the basement offices of the newspaper or the radio station. At home, he enjoys listening to whatever music he can, reading whatever books he can, and taking walks wherever he can.

Janet Lee, UC Davis

Janet Lee is a senior at University of California, Davis double majoring in Psychology and Communications. She spends most of her time on campus, whether it’s in the library or at work. During her free time, she enjoys online shopping, listening to podcasts, and reading NPR with her latte at her local cafe.

Heidi Meier, UC Davis

Heidi Meier is a junior at the University of California, Davis pursuing degrees in communication and psychology.  At school, Heidi can be found participating in psychology experiments or lounging on the quad.  Outside of school, she enjoys exploring new cities, adventuring with friends, and playing with her puppy, Pancake.

Ashlyn Porter, University of Dayton

Ashlyn Porter is a senior at the University of Dayton pursuing a degree in communication with a concentration in theater as well as a minor in sociology. A self-declared cinephile, Ashlyn enjoys watching and studying film in hopes of one day being involved in various aspects of the film industry. Her passions also include in writing, reading, baking and performing Shakespeare for her dog.

Britni Roberts, North Central College

Britni Roberts is a senior at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois pursuing a degree in English Writing. She has been an Editor for the North Central Kindling humor magazine, Assistant News and Arts Editor for the North Central Chronicle newspaper, as well as a DJ and Rock News Reporter for WONC-FM 89.1, her college’s radio station. She enjoys listening to music and spending time with her friends, boyfriend, and his cat Willow.

Ashley Yang, UC Davis

Ashley Yang will be entering her junior year at the University of California, Davis in the fall, where she is pursuing a double major in Communication and Economics and considering a minor in Comparative Literature. Outside of class, she loves to see her friends and family, jam out to T-Swift, make smoothies, and curl up with a good beach-read book. Other interests of hers include ballet and gymnastics, skiing, volunteer work, chick-flick movies, animals, and Christmas.
