The Summer Checklist For College

Now that you’ve been accepted to college and you’ve committed to your school, what are your next steps?  Though the summer is a time for relaxation and vacation, keep in mind that there are still many things to do before you’re ready to move into college life.  Here’s a list of things that you want to check off your to-do list before you head out into the college life!

  • Buy Some College Gear

Now that you know which college you’re going to, tell everyone else about it!  Purchase a sweatshirt, baseball cap, phone case, or sweatpants and let everyone know how proud you are to be a bear or a duck or a beaver, whatever your school mascot may be.  Buying your clothing now while you’re still on your parents’ money can be a good idea because college sweatshirts can get pretty pricey.  Remind your parents of your recent achievement (getting into college!) and they’ll be more than willing splurge a little for that fleece hoodie!

  • Get in Contact with Your Class

Chances are, you’re not the only one that’s excited about going to college.  Your future classmates are probably jumping up and down, excited to meet you as well!  Join the class Facebook page or see if your school provides a forum where you can talk to newly admitted students.

  • Start Saving

As you’re probably aware, college is going to cost you a bit.  Even though you can apply for as many scholarships as you want, you’re going to have to pay for living expenses that you might not have thought of before like toiletries, food, and other knick knacks that you’ll need day to day.  Starting to save during the summer time is a great way for you to start practicing for the day-to-day living of being away from home.  Additionally, you may want to look for a summer job to help accumulate a bit of cash.  If you don’t have your own bank account, this might be something worth looking into.  Most banks will offer a student option and help you get started saving and earning interest.

  • Sign Up for an Admitted Students Program

Even though you may have toured your future school already, it’s always good to go back and take a second look, from an admitted student point of view.  An admitted student program will also put you in direct contact with other admitted students and it’s a great time to get to know other people in your class and maybe even pick a roommate!  Some admitted student programs have an overnight stay and will let you stay overnight in dorms or residential housing so you can get a feel for what a day in the life of the college you will feel like.

  • Meet Your Roommate!

One of the most exciting things about college is meeting new people.  One such person may be your future roommate.  Once you find out who your roommate might be, look them up!  Become Facebook friends and chat about what your sleeping and/or studying habits are like, what hobbies or interests you might share, and what you might be studying.  Getting to know your roommate ahead of time will give you an idea of who to expect instead of meeting a complete stranger.

  • Start Shopping For Your Dorm

Many students wait till August before shopping for their dorm supplies but chances are, if you wait that long, most of the good stuff will be picked up and you’ll be left with scraps.  Start shopping early so you don’t forget anything and that way you can pick out everything you want and need before the manic rush to school starts in.  Starting early also gives you time to remember if you’ve forgotten anything.

  • Look Up Potential Classes

One of the hardest things to do while prepping for college is signing up for classes.  Because you haven’t had any experience in your college yet, it’s hard to know which professors will be better than others and which classes will be more interesting.  Do your research.  Use websites like Course Rank and Rate Your Professor to try and help you decide which classes will be best for you.  If you have a friend who is a year or two older than you and goes to your future college, it might be in your best interest to ask them what they think might be some good starter classes.
