Why I Chose Central Michigan University

As a high school student, I was more of a ‘live in the moment’ kind of girl. I wasn’t exactly thinking about college right away until it came time to start applying.

  • Consider Your Interests and The Location

I always knew I wanted to do something with fashion, which is where I started my search. I also knew I wanted to stay in my home state for my college education, which helped me to narrow down my choices a little bit more. So there I was, searching for a Michigan school that offered fashion programs.

When a degree in fashion comes to mind, many students tend to think of studying in big cities like New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago. However, you would be surprised by how many universities actually offer fashion designer and merchandising programs outside of large cities.

At this point, I had narrowed my choices down to three specific universities in Michigan that had a fashion program. One was in a small town, the other in a city, and the last was close to my hometown – a perfect mix to be able to decide from.

  • Evaluate The Programs

After receiving my acceptance letters, it was time to do a little more in-depth research. I reviewed the programs at each university and found that I was quite interested in two of the three. I was hoping to be a little bit further from home, which is my reasoning for ruling out the third university

The two remaining universities had great fashion programs, however, the one at Central Michigan University stood out to me the most. Their program seemed to be very well rounded, allowing students to become knowledgeable in all areas of the fashion industry. This is something you don’t find quite often with other fashion schools– typically their programs focus on one specific area of the industry whether it is textiles, design, or buying.

  • Visit Campuses

From here it was time to visit each university. With the help of my parents, we were able to go to CMU and the other university for campus tours. Once I arrived at CMU, I knew it was the school for me. The university was different from other universities in the sense that it wasn’t as spread out and many of the facilities were brand new. I found that liking your campus was extremely important because I would be living there for the next four years.

  • Explore Extracurriculars

I also found that CMU’s fashion program offered several student organizations that I would be able to join. This was important to me because I was extremely involved in high school and planned on being involved in college as well. From here, I knew CMU was the perfect choice for me.

I am now a junior at Central Michigan University and can say that I have never regretted my decision to go here.
